Neighbourhood
This is a trendy residential area in London, only 20 minutes to Kings Cross or 35 minutes to Oxford Street. There are excellent local restaurants, coffee shops, green grocers, butchers within 5 minutes walk, and a small supermarket within 8 minutes walk. We recommend in particular Jolene, Primeur, Trattoria, Acoustic, Mangal 1. There are lots of good places to eat and but food locally. For very local places to eat out or go for drinks, we recommend: Perilla: this is a trendy, smart restaurant, serving modern British food. It’s typically a set menu. Expensive, but we expect it will be in the Michelin guide very soon! Jolene: a trendy restaurant 5 minutes away on the green, serving modern Italian/British small plates. They also do excellent pastries, bread and coffee in the morning Primeur: a trendy modern French restaurant 5 minutes away. Best for dinners Trattoria: a casual, affordable Italian restaurant 5 minutes away on the green. Oi vita: a very casual pizza restaurant, for both eat in and take out. It’s about 6-7 minutes away. Tranga: a tiny place on the green, serving tapas and Spanish small plates. It also has great wines. Lady Mildmay: a great pub on the green serving modern Mediterranean - it’s good food. The Alma: a really fun, lively pub for the evening, with lots of music. The food is fine, but Oi vita pizza is only next door! The Cellars: the pub at the end of our road. Good for a local drink but not very good food. Lizzie’s on the Green: this is a cafe on the green itself, serving tasty and affordable breakfast baps. They have tables on the green, which is lovely in the sun. Belle Époque: a French patisserie serving delicious croissants, at the top of the green. Acoustic cafe: this is a hearty breakfast place, serving big fry ups, shakshuka eggs, pancakes or sandwiches. They have sunny tables on the pavement in the summer. Romeo and Giulietta: the best gelato you’ll find in London (other than Gelupo in Soho)! On a hot day there’s a queue. Try the ricotta and caramelised fig or the tiramisu. It’s a 10 minute walk towards Stoke Newington. Slightly further afield, but still close, you can find great areas to eat out, shop and party: Stoke Newington Church Street: you’ll find lots of very nice restaurants here, and some great shopping for homewares and fashion. It’s a short bus journey, Uber or 20 minute walk. We’d recommend Aun, serving Japanese small plates; or Rasa for authentic, casual Keralan/Indian food (there are separate vegetarian and meat restaurants - the vegetarian is by far the best). Upper Street: you’ll find endless restaurants and cafes here, with some very good high end fashion and homeware shopping too. We’d recommend Ottollenghi for exceptional Middle Eastern inspired food and cakes (great to eat before seeing a show at the Almeida Theatre). Dalston: this is a trendy place for nightlife, bars and restaurants. It’s also good for vintage shopping (Beyond Retro is a vintage warehouse!). We’d recommend Mangal 1 for affordable, very casual Turkish food; Dusty Knuckle for exceptional lunchtime focaccia by sandwiches; House of Momo for Nepalese dumplings; Chick n Sours for great Korean-influenced chicken burgers. For nightlife, Dalston Superstore is a fun bar/club and we’d really recommend catching a show at Vortex jazz bar. Green Lanes: there’s a big Turkish community around here so you’ll get really good, authentic Turkish food. We recommend Antepellier, a big, fun and casual place with large portions. It’s a short bus ride or Uber away. The local area - eating in The kitchen should have everything you need. There’s a second fridge freezer in the basement and more electrical kitchen equipment under the stairs of the kitchen. If you’d like to buy food locally, there are great options within walking distance: Newington Green Fruit and Veg: a green grocers with an outstanding selection, selling every variety of fruit and veg you could possibly want! Stella’s butcher: next door to Newington Green fruit and veg, this is an ethical butchers also selling wines. Mother Earth: all organic, natural health foods. Yield N16: an organic wine store, with a great selection of wines and beers, a deli and good bread Jumi: a specialist cheese shop, serving mainly Swiss cheese and artisanal beer Costcutter: for essentials like milk, costcutters next to the fruit and veg shop is the closest and has the best selection. Tesco express: a short walk away on Green Lanes
