Where to stay in La Rochelle

La Rochelle is a picturesque city on the Atlantic coast of France, with a rich maritime history and lots to see and do. Here are some of the best neighbourhoods to stay in when visiting La Rochelle.

Vieux Port

The Old Port is the heart of La Rochelle, with plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops. The area is also home to many historic buildings, including the Tour St-Nicolas, the Tour de la Lanterne, and the Hôtel de Ville. If you want to be in the centre of everything, this is the place to stay.

Saint-Nicolas

Located just south of Vieux Port, this neighbourhood is known for its lively atmosphere and abundance of cafes and restaurants. The area is also home to the Aquarium de La Rochelle, one of the largest aquariums in Europe. This is a great area to stay in if you're looking for a bustling, vibrant neighbourhood.

La Genette

If you're looking for a more peaceful neighbourhood, La Genette is a great option. This residential area is located just east of the city centre, and is known for its tree-lined streets and beautiful houses. The neighbourhood is also home to Parc Charruyer, a large park with walking trails and a lake.

Les Minimes

This neighbourhood is located just south of La Rochelle's city centre, and is known for its marina and beach. The area is home to many restaurants and cafes, as well as a large shopping centre. If you want to be close to the water and enjoy a more modern neighbourhood, Les Minimes is a great option.

La Pallice

Located on the west side of La Rochelle, La Pallice is a historic neighbourhood that was once a separate village. Today, it is home to the city's commercial port and a number of industrial buildings. Despite its industrial nature, the neighbourhood has a certain charm, with narrow streets and traditional houses. This is a great area to stay in if you want to experience a different side of La Rochelle.
