A district of Bordeaux on the right bank of the Garonne, La Bastide became part of the Gironde capital in the 19th century. It owes its name to its original status as a "bastide", i.e. a village built on a regular plan, in this case around the Mons fort and a monastery. The inauguration of the Pont de Pierre in 1822 marked the beginning of urbanization in the area. The village of La Bastide, which became a district of Bordeaux in 1869, retained its industrial vocation for a long time. However, the economic crisis of the 1970s wiped out many industrial sites and shipyards, giving way to wastelands and vacant lots. The entry into the 21st century marked the beginning of a total rehabilitation of the district, with the creation of new housing, schools and green spaces. The arrival of the streetcar in 2003 marked a new turning point for the district, with direct links to the city center on the other side of the river.
