The Champagne Fairs, between the 12th and 13th centuries, mainly took place around the Saint-Jean-au-Marché Church as well as in the surrounding streets and squares, each specialized in one or more types of trade: second-hand clothing, spices, poultry, cloth, salt trading... In this square, money changers and exchange agents, often Jews or Lombards (from northern Italy), conducted their business. Many of them had been established in Troyes for generations. Nearby, on Rue de la Montée-des-Changes, the Hôtel des Angoiselles was built for a family of Lombard bankers. Merchants from all over Europe brought their own currencies, but at the fairs, only the coins issued by the Counts of Champagne or the King of France were recognized. Equipped with a precision balance, the money changer would weigh the coins, assess their alloy (precious metal content), and calculate their equivalent value. These transactions were taxed and served as a significant source of revenue for the county. With the decline of the fairs in the 14th century, this square was occupied by horticulturists and herbalists (it was then called "Place du Marché-aux-Herbes"), and later by bakers in the 17th century. This is how it gained its current name.

Please respect the premises. --> We kindly ask you to leave the property in good condition, as it was upon your arrival, to empty the bins and place them in the designated containers, to close all windows, turn off the heating and lights, and, if possible, remove the bed linens and place them along with the towels on the bed. --> If you experience any problems, I will ensure immediate action as soon as possible, but please note that no one is on-site 24/7. --> Cleaning is included and intended for restoring the property to its original condition, not for disposing of your trash, underwear, or other suspicious items :) --> Bedding and towels are provided for each guest. Replacement can be arranged upon request with an additional charge. --> Upon your arrival, you will find soap, shower gel, coffee, and tea available for your arrival day. Supplies for the remainder of your stay will be at your expense. --> If you stay beyond the indicated departure time, an additional fee will be charged: +10€ per hour. --> If the presence of an animal, fur, droppings, or other evident signs is detected, an additional charge of 50 euros will apply for disinfection of the premises (allergens, bacteria, etc.). --> If any odor of smoke is detected (cigarettes, drugs, hookah, etc.), an additional charge of 50 euros will apply for disinfection of the premises. --> It is expressly requested to leave the property as it was upon your arrival.
