The neighbourhood surrounding Simone Veil Park, often considered part of the historic "La Caraussane" district, is one of the most charming in Sète town centre. It serves as the perfect link between the bustling canals and the peaceful slopes of Mont Saint-Clair. Here’s what the neighbourhood looks like: The heart of the neighbourhood: the park itself Formerly known as the “Jardin du Château d’eau” (and renamed in 2005), Simone Veil Park is a veritable green lung, designed in successive terraces to follow the contours of the town. It is a very peaceful, shaded spot, featuring ponds, artificial grottos, a children’s playground and an imposing statue of Neptune. A little anecdote: it was in one of the ponds in this park that the famous writer Paul Valéry claimed he nearly drowned as a child! The surrounding atmosphere: Very central yet unspoilt: Although it is located right in the city centre (just above the Town Hall), the neighbourhood enjoys a real sense of tranquillity. It offers a clear break from the hustle and bustle of the port and the main thoroughfares. Proximity to points of interest: Walking down the narrow streets (such as Rue du Député Salis), you are only about a 5-minute walk from the famous Halles de Sète and the Canal Royal. On the other side, heading uphill, you’ll find yourself in the small residential lanes climbing the hill, near the Lycée Paul Valéry. The layout of the streets: It’s a ‘sloping’ neighbourhood. The architecture is very typical of old Sète, with picturesque, sometimes narrow, alleyways and beautiful old buildings. Due to this layout, parking can be a bit tricky and walking (or the bus network) remains the best way to get around.
