The Saint-Ferdinand district, often associated with L’Aiguillon, is one of the most authentic areas of Arcachon. Located to the east of the town, near the harbour and on the border with La Teste-de-Buch, it retains a strong maritime identity inherited from its history of fishermen, sailors and shipyards. In the 19th century, the development of fishing, particularly sardine fishing, shaped the neighbourhood. Even today, the fishing and marina, the fishermen’s huts and the down-to-earth atmosphere are a reminder of this past. Unlike the more touristy parts of Arcachon, Saint-Ferdinand has retained a lively character all year round, much appreciated by the locals. The heart of the neighbourhood centres on the Church of Saint-Ferdinand, whose origins date back to the mid-19th century. It is an iconic landmark for local residents and bears witness to the area’s history.
